Chore Marked Done or Approved by Mistake? How to Fix It

6 min read

Short answer: Fix only the action that actually happened. If the chore is still waiting for approval, your child can remove the accidental check mark where the app offers that option. If an adult approved by mistake, that adult undoes the approval, as long as the app still shows the undo option. If real money has already been paid outside the app, you'll need to sort that out outside the app too.

The main thing to avoid is fixing it twice. If you undo an approval and then also deduct coins for the same chore, the balance ends up wrong the other way.

First: what state is the chore in?

Before you tap anything, look at the chore and ask three questions. Which child is it? Which chore, and on what date? Has anything already been added to the virtual balance?

Your answers put the chore in one of three states:

State What happened Who fixes it What changes
1. Marked done, waiting for approval Your child tapped done, no adult has approved Your child removes the check mark in their own day view The chore goes back to not done. The balance stays the same, because nothing was approved
2. Approved in the app An adult approved, and the virtual value was added The adult undoes the approval from the approvals overview, if undo is still shown The approval is withdrawn and the virtual value is removed from the balance
3. Approved and paid in real money Approved in the app, and an adult also paid cash or sent money outside the app The adult, both in the app and outside it The app can correct the virtual balance. Real money has to be agreed on and adjusted outside the app

State 1: Your child tapped done too early

This is the easiest one. Maybe your child picked the wrong chore in the list, or tapped done on "Tidy your room" while clothes were still on the floor.

In Kroni, each done mark sits separately in the child's day view. Your child can remove the mark on that one chore without touching the others. As long as the chore is still waiting for approval, nothing has happened to the balance. Not every chore requires approval, so check whether a virtual value has already been recorded.

It helps to do it together the first time. Say it plainly: "It's okay to tap the wrong thing. We'll just take the check off." That makes it easier for your child to speak up next time instead of hoping nobody notices.

State 2: You approved by mistake

This happens easily. You scroll through several approvals in the evening, tap the wrong child, or approve a chore that wasn't really done.

The approvals overview shows recent decisions that can still be undone, along with how long the undo stays available. When you undo, you see how the balance will change before you confirm. Read that confirmation. Do the child, the chore and the amount match what you meant to fix?

Two things to remember:

  • Undo, don't compensate. When the undo removes the virtual value, don't also add a deduction or adjustment for the same thing.
  • Undoing isn't the same as rejecting effort. If the chore was actually done, just halfway, that's a question of judgment and feedback. You can read more in Approving Kids' Chores: Feedback Without the Fight.

State 3: The money has already been paid

Kroni tracks virtual coins or units. Real money, whether that's cash, a bank transfer or a mobile payment app, is something you give outside the app. So undoing in the app can never take back money that has already been handed over.

If you paid for a chore that was approved by mistake:

  1. Correct the virtual balance in the app if undo is still available.
  2. Write down what was actually paid outside the app and compare it with the corrected balance. Agree with your child how to handle any remaining difference. If the next payment already accounts for the amount, do not deduct it again.
  3. Write down what you agreed so it doesn't get deducted twice.

When the undo option is gone

Not every action can be undone. The app only offers corrections for recent decisions that are still relevant. If too much time has passed, the missing button isn't a bug.

Here's what to do instead:

  • Don't delete the chore, and don't delete your child's profile to "reset" things. That doesn't fix the original mistake.
  • Note the difference: child, chore, date and virtual value.
  • Agree with your child how you'll handle it, for example by adjusting the next real payment by the same amount.

A fictional example from start to finish

This example is made up. The coins are illustrative units, not a recommended rate. There are no deductions or other balance changes in this example.

Ida (9) has the chore "Empty the dishwasher," worth 10 coins. On Monday evening, Dad approves three chores in a row. One of them is Ida's dishwasher chore, but her older brother Jonas emptied it, and Ida had tapped done on the wrong day.

Here's how the fix went:

  1. Dad checks: child Ida, chore "Empty the dishwasher," date Monday, +10 coins recorded. State 2.
  2. Undo still shows in the approvals overview. Dad chooses to undo.
  3. The confirmation says that 10 coins will be reversed. Dad confirms, then checks that the balance has gone from 85 to 75 coins.
  4. No real money has been paid yet, so state 3 doesn't apply.
  5. Dad doesn't add any extra deduction.
Moment Chore Status Ida's balance (coins, illustration)
Before the mistake Empty the dishwasher Marked done by Ida, waiting 75
After the wrong approval Empty the dishwasher Approved 85
After undo Empty the dishwasher No longer approved 75

If Dad had also deducted 10 coins, Ida would have ended up at 65. That's exactly the double fix you want to avoid.

Checklist: fixing a mistaken tap

  • Child: ________
  • Chore: ________
  • Date: ________
  • Virtual value recorded: ________
  • State (check one):
    • 1. Marked done, not approved
    • 2. Approved in the app
    • 3. Approved and paid in real money outside the app
  • Undo available in the app? [ ] Yes [ ] No
  • Balance before the fix: ________
  • Balance after the fix: ________
  • Real money to adjust outside the app: ________
  • Agreed with child: ________

Small habits that mean fewer mistaken taps

  • Approve one chore at a time, and check the name before you tap.
  • Do approvals at a set time instead of on the go.
  • Keep the chore list short and clear. If you're unsure what's reasonable to ask, What should kids be able to do at home? A complete list by age can be a starting point, adjusted to your own child.
  • If you close out the week, remember that closing a week doesn't approve chores or pay money by itself. Go through pending chores before you close it.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to the balance if my child removes a done mark?
Nothing, as long as the chore is still waiting for approval. For a chore that requires approval, the virtual value is only added when an adult approves, so removing the mark is all that's needed. Not every chore requires approval, so check whether a value has already been recorded.
Can I undo an approval from last month?
Not necessarily. The app only offers undo for recent decisions, and you can see whether the option is still there. If it's gone, note the difference and agree with your child how to adjust it, without deleting chores or profiles.
Do I get the money back if I undo in the app?
No. Kroni records virtual coins only. Undo cannot retrieve real money. Compare what was actually paid with the corrected balance, then agree how to handle any remaining difference. Do not deduct an amount that has already been accounted for a second time.
